Dental Sealants

Children are more prone to developing cavities than adults. Of course, there are several reasons for their increased vulnerability.

• First and foremost is that they just do not like brushing their teeth. Cute toothbrushes and flavored toothpaste are available to help encourage brushing and make it more fun.

• Second, their mouths are so small, it is hard to maneuver a brush around the mouth, especially to clean the back teeth.

• Lastly, baby teeth have lots of tiny grooves and crevices, making it easier to collect food and bacteria which are the breeding ground for tooth decay (cavities).

The Center for Disease Control recommends dental sealants to help protect children’s teeth during this vulnerable time in their development. Dental sealants offer up to 80% of protection at two years and up to 50% afterward.

Cederberg Dental offers this short and painless procedure in the office. Dr. Robert A. Cederberg applies a rubberized liquid onto the teeth with a small brush. When dried, it forms a seal over the teeth to help keep debris and bacteria from getting into the nooks and crannies of the teeth. The sealants are monitored with regular dental check-ups and can easily be reapplied if damaged or worn off.
