Root Canal

When a tooth is severely infected or decayed, fixing the tooth may require extraction, but the healthier option would be to save the root of the tooth. In some cases, a root canal may be suggested to keep the root from being pulled. By saving the root, the jaw and bone structures stay healthier.

Decay and infections can be dangerous if left untreated in the soft tissues of the mouth. Tooth decay will continue to spread and make much larger repairs necessary. The decay can also open up areas where infection can get into the body and spread.

In a root canal, the insides of the root are scooped out and a special material called gutta-percha is placed. Gutta-percha is a rubbery compound that helps seal the inside of the root. The hole used to get into the root is sealed with a filling, and the top of the tooth is prepared to receive a crown. This procedure replaces the affected tooth and restores its primary function.
